The version of Wine 1.3.26, provided by default in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty, has a curious issue with Rosetta Stone 3.4.5, the microphone doesn’ t work with Rosetta Stone 3.4.5 .
To resolve this issue I added the Alexandre Montplais’s PPA for winepulse which has a patched version of Wine (1.3.19) that uses Pulseaudio. This patch doesn’t work with pulseaudio in ubuntu 11.04 and rosetta stone 3.4.5 but works well with Alsa checked and Pulseaudio unchecked, let’s get started…
scenario:
Hardware: IBM Lenovo Thinkpad x61s.
Audio: internal audio 1 output/1 input – Analog stereo duplex
Audio input: internal audio analog Stereo
System Operator: Linux Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal
Rosetta Stone version: 3.4.5
wine version: 1.3.19 (Alexandre Montplaisir patched)
Add Alexandre Montplaisir’ repository with the shell
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:alexandre-montplaisir/ppa && sudo add-apt-repository ppa:/alexandre-montplaisir/winepulse && sudo apt-get update
or adding these strings in /etc/apt/sources.list or adding these strings clicking Add in Synaptic Package Manager -> Settings -> Repositories -> Other Software:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/alexandre-montplaisir/ppa/ubuntu natty main deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/alexandre-montplaisir/ppa/ubuntu natty main deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/alexandre-montplaisir/winepulse/ubuntu natty main deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/alexandre-montplaisir/winepulse/ubuntu natty main
With Synaptic or apt-get in the shell, remove wine 1.3.26 provided by default in ubuntu and install wine 1.3.19, patched by Alexandre Montplaisir.
Run winecfg and in the audio section check ALSA Driver and uncheck PulseAudio Driver.Click on Apply, close the panel and
check the microphone volume with alsamixer.
Now You can see and adjust the microphone in the Setting Preference.
UPDATE:
Someone tried with different hardware and doesn’t work, but with someone work fine.
work:
Thinkpad x61s with ubuntu 11.04
kubuntu 12.04 LTS with play on linux
gigabyte s class (all of this motherboard family)
32 bit linux and wine (1.3.19 ) play on linux
(thanks to Amin)
doesn’t work:
Asus EeePc 900a with ubuntu 11.04
Ubuntu 11.10 and Rosetta Stone 3.4.7 under Wine 1.4-rc2
This didn’t work for me… Fresh install of 11.04, Rosetta 3.4.5… still no mic. showing up. Any other ideas? I did a while back have it working in Wine after totally uninstalling pulseaudio but no-one could tell me exactly what effect this had on the overall system and performance…
Are you using the wine 1.3.19 patched by Alexandre Montplaisir ?
In these days I tried with a asus eeepc 900a, but dosen’t work.
For me that I have a thinkpad and for my friends (someone have a hp, someone a dell and someone have a toshiba)
everything work fine. I must write a update in the post.
Can you indicate, please, with what kind of laptop or sound driver did you have tried?
after type the commands in the Synaptic as the Steps above i have error that the source is not found

I guess you have a 64 bit and I don’t know if it works, anyway with the upgrade with the new version of ubuntu this tip doesn’t work anymore.
Thanks, it worked for me, with the extended audio settings included in alexandre-montplaisir version!
Are you working with the last version of Ubuntu ?
Hi, I have Ubuntu 11.10 and Rosetta Stone 3.4.7 under Wine 1.4-rc2
The Microphone doesn’t work, do you have some advice ?
I’m sorry, I haven’t at this moment
With Synaptic or apt-get in the shell, remove wine 1.3.26 provided by default in ubuntu and install wine 1.3.19, patched by Alexandre Montplaisir.
Ok you made me remove my wine but when i tried to install the specific version you mention there is nothing new in synaptic, i installed “wine” pack and it doesn’t have any ALSA check in configs
What about Pulseaudio?
it worked in linux kubuntu 12.04 LTS
with “play on linux” you can use it better
it works with gigabyte s class (all of this motherboard family)
32 bit linux
and wine (1.3.19 ) play on linux
Thank you Amin
Reblogged this on Memphis' Coding Adventures and commented:
For those having trouble getting their Mic to work with Rosetta Stone using Ubuntu.
SOLUTION! This worked for me:
http://rosettastone-challenge.blogspot.com.br/2013/12/rosetta-stone-linux.html
Solution came with the following settings:
1 – Install latest Wine 1.5.14
Open the terminal and paste these commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install wine1.5
2 – Go to Configure Wine, in the tab ‘libraries’, enter ‘winepulse.drv’ in the box and click on add, click yes on the warning. Select winepulse.drv and change load order to ‘disabled’.
3 – Try running Rosetta Stone and see if the problem was solved.
For me, two options of microphone appeared, any will do.
Find more details on the blog.
Great job!
